Episode 35 – Looking Ahead To 2020

In this episode I discuss two developing themes that are relevant to preppers in 2020: the end of prepper complacency, and the continued advancement of the “cancel culture,” which seeks to silence any opposing voices or opinions. The rationale of silencing dissenting opinions is that it is only safe, protects people, and keeps the peace. If you have not yet experienced it, it will come your way soon, so be prepared.

The Kindle version of my book, EMP NYC, will be free on Amazon for a few days, so check it out if you have not already gotten this exciting, post-apocalyptic book. The link to the Kindle version of EMP NYC is here.

Stay tuned for a third installment of this “All At Once” post-apocalyptic book series, which will probably be released towards the end of 2020.

And, speaking of books, check out Ray Fair’s book on predicting presidential elections. According to Professor Fair’s analysis, if the after-tax, after-inflation income of the average American voter increases beyond a certain point, the candidate of the incumbent party will win the presidential election. Professor Fair’s formula has a margin of error, so it is not guaranteed, but under his formula, President Trump will win re-election handily. Fair has a great track record for his prediction. The link to Professor Fair’s website is here and the link to his book is here.

Episode 34 – The Problem With Cash

Despite what you think or may have been told, saving big amounts of cash might not be such a great idea, not only because of the inflation that devalues your cash, but the inevitable government scrutiny that comes after spending or depositing a lot of cash.

In this episode I discuss the various problems with dealing with large amounts of cash, especially amounts of $10,000 or more. Did you know that even some transactions of less than $10,000 can prompt a report to the government?

Of course, the argument will be made that if you have nothing illegal to hide, why worry about a government inquiry? But anyone who has dealt with a government inquiry would tell you that they would rather the inquiry never have happened at all, even if nothing came of it.

Episode 33 – Christian Hospitality

What happens to you after you die is a valid prepper issue, and serious preppers should listen to this episode and take seriously the issues of Christian faith discussed here.

In this short sermon I recently gave at our local nursing home, I related the amazing story of Christian hospitality that I saw for five weeks this summer, when my two friends hosted the friends and family of an old friend who came to visit and then got hospitalized.

Among the serious moments in this talk there were a few jokes and a happy audience.

In the intro I discussed a client who had been in the Vietnam War, and still felt happy at recalling his visit by Bope Hope in an Army hospital. The USO is great, and deserves our support!

You can donate to the USO at this link here.

Also, I found a whole list of websites here, where you can donate to provide care packages for our troops.

There are no Amazon links to any products, but below are some useful links for further investigation into this most important topic (I like these pastors).  You can also find a good local church from these links:

Episode 32 – Prepping Basics

Do you know the prepping basics? We all seem caught up in our own various projects or emphases that have to do with prepping, but occasionally it is a good idea to step back and review the basic rules of prepping.

In this episode I go over many of the basics on prepping, including a few chestnuts from the prepping world, like “two is one and one is none.”  I discuss the basics of water, food, weapons, medicine, and many others. This was especially fun: at the end, I discuss the importance of getting a survival retreat in the country, with the added benefit that it could be a good real estate investment — then I provide a real life example!

According to ready.gov, this month is National Preparedness Month, so we all need to be good, obedient citizens and follow the government’s lead, and be prepared.

Episode 30 – Blazing Saddles And Prepping

Have you ever wondered whether there are any prepping issues presented in the 1974 Mel Brooks’ movie Blazing Saddles?  Of course you have!  There is a lot more to that movie than cowboys sitting around the campfire, eating beans and having gas!

In this episode I discuss the prepping issues that came up — even unknowingly — in Blazing Saddles. Enjoy!

Some movies or publications discussed in this episode include:

Bean-O and Gas-X gas prevention pills. Those cowboys at the campfire sure could have used this!

Blazing Saddles Blu-Ray DVD. In an age of political correctness, this movie may soon be banned. So buy it while you still can!

Other things discussed:

Imodium AD pills

Fiber pills

Pepcid acid-controlling pills

Gatorade powder

Episode 29 – Surviving College

In this very cynical yet funny episode, I discuss how to survive college with as little debt as possible (“student loan debt is a killer”), and get high grades. The higher your college grades, the more career options you have once you graduate.

At one point in the podcast I discuss member of Congress and general goofball Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC), who is constantly saying unintentionally funny things (the latest was to compare American immigration holding facilities to Nazi concentration camps in WW2).

She is always good for a laugh. Anyway, AOC graduated with very high grades from a prominent American university. I was about to publish this podcast when I read this column discussing AOC’s latest faux pas. This column perfectly sums up my opinions of AOC and her beliefs: she is merely repeating ideas that she was taught by tenured professors. Keep this in mind if you are in college class and given an essay test where you have a choice between developing a conservative opinion or a liberal opinion that agrees with the opinions of the professor. You will be graded accordingly, as was AOC.

Episode 28 – In The Rabbit Hole Farewell

For many years, Aaron produced an excellent prepper podcast named In The Rabbit Hole (ITRH), where his listeners felt safe and sound while learning valuable survival skills and absorbing Aaron’s good humor and survivalist comradery.  Then, on March 20, 2019, Aaron “ripped the bandaid off quickly” and published his WTF episode, in which he announced that while current podcast episodes will indefinitely remain on his website and iTunes, he will no longer produce new ITRH episodes after episode 300 (sometime in June).

In this episode of Survival In Motion, I caught up with Aaron, pouted about his exit from content-production at In The Rabbit Hole, and thanked him for his excellent podcasts through the years. Aaron spoke of some lesson learned at ITRH, like the importance of preparing for the smaller, less-glamorous setbacks (echoed on ITRH episode 297), keeping it simple with guns (as he emphasized in ITRH episode 296), and keeping politics in perspective when anticipating the end of the world.  Aaron also confirmed what everyone suspected, which was that his most-influential ITRH guest — by far — was yours truly.

Although the closing music was maudlin, I hope not to end this podcast on a sad note, but to impart some encouragement to this talented producer of survivalist content.  I encourage Aaron to return to the prepping world in some way, and I encourage everyone else to check out In The Rabbit Hole’s YouTube page, and any other content Aaron might produce in the future (which will be announced here).

And speaking of surviving more everyday disasters, I share a couple that I recently experienced and how I survived them.  The first had to do with emptying your survival retreat of extra junk that might be helpfully dropped off by friends (see chapter 28 of my book, Dirt Cheap Valuable Survival Retreat), using antibiotic ointment to heal cuts faster, and staying up to date with your tetanus shot.

Another everyday disaster I recently experienced was a road rage incident, in which I fortuitously scared off the possible assailant by pointing my iPhone at him and giving the impression I was videotaping.  If it was needed, I also had on hand a can of pepper spray, specifically a Sabre small container of pepper spray, which I bought on Amazon for $10 each (buy this only if it is legal in your jurisdiction).  Sadly, I was not called to use the pepper spray on the loathsome road rager.

Episode 27 – Dystopian Author Boyd Craven

Boyd Craven is a very talented author, and has written over 30 fictional books about people trying to survive either hard times or the end of the world as we know it.

Boyd’s latest book is Darkest Days: Still Surviving and is available on Amazon here. In this podcast, we also discussed another of his books, One Man’s Opus: A Survival And Preparedness Story, which be found here. Boyd’s late dog Beast is prominently discussed in that book.

Boyd’s website is Boydcraven.com, and his Amazon Author profile is here.

Craven had an experience with an online scammer, who tried to get some money out of Boyd, and Boyd put the scammer through the Twilight Zone. There is probably a Gofundme collection set up somewhere to pay for the therapy bills needed by this unfortunate scammer, whose only misdeed was to try and scam Boyd out of a few bucks. Part of the hilarious exchange can be found here.

Episode 26 – Cache Tube Prepping

Behold the humble cache tube — something that you fill up with important stuff and bury somewhere, hoping that someday you can dig it up and use the contents to survive. If the world comes to an end, you will be glad you have a few of these around.

In this episode I discuss how to put one together and what you might want to put inside it before burying it.

A lot of this information can be found in the Containers chapter of my book Dirt Cheap Valuable Prepping, or in chapter 18 of my book Dirt Cheap Valuable Survival Retreat.

I recommend the material ABS to put together a cache tube. I recently paid almost $55 at my local Lowe’s for the parts for this cache tube. Here is what I bought:

A 2-foot long, 4-inch diameter ABS tube (but you can make a cache tube 8 feet or longer if you want);

All-purpose cement (really glue in a can that can be used for PVC or ABS tubes);

A 4-inch diameter ABS cap;

A 4-inch diameter ABS female adaptor;

A 4-inch diameter ABS plug (to screw into the threaded end of the female adaptor);

Common plumber’s tape;

Any size nuts, 100 or more, that you can throw around in your yard or flower bed or wherever you bury this thing. That way, any smartalec who shows up with a metal detector, trying to find anything you might have buried, will spend a lot of time digging up nuts, then get frustrated and leave in a huff.  I would recommend against using longer mechanical screws, wood screws, or nails for this.

A cache tube is not just for burying. You can put one of these into a car fender, a tree, a piece of furniture, under the floor or inside the wall of your house (but watch the 1950 Jimmy Durante movie, A Christmas Wish, as a cautionary tale about hiding anything inside your house wall).

Here are some possible contents to put inside your cache tube before you bury it:

Freezer baggies (pint size)

Berkey Sport Filtered Water Bottle

Travel Bidet

Bandaids

Gerber Multi-tool

Junk silver coins (for this I have been a satisfied customer of at JM Bullion)

Disassembled guns and ammo

Wells Lamont Work Gloves

Extra Clothes

Menstrual Cup (tampon replacement)

Flashlight (Dorcy, weatherproof)

Eneloop AA Batteries

Goal Zero solar battery charger

Battery Tester

Medication (your prescription meds + OTC meds like Benadryl, aspirin and Immodium AD)

Anti-skin-fungus lotion

An extra set of your glasses in a hard case

Electrolyte drink mix

Camping Blanket

Mountain House food pouches

Long spork

550 Paracord

Rain Poncho
