Episode 23 – It’s A Wonderful Prepping Life

I know this might be hard to believe, but I was working on an episode of the Survival In Motion podcast when I got struck by lightning, and I was sent back in time into a Christmas movie from 1946. I accidentally sent George Bailey running off the wrong way on the bridge and hilarity ensued. Will I be able to undo all the damage before SHTF?

I eventually convey the important prepper lesson that if you ever go back in time, you need to clean up your mess, so that you don’t mess things up in the present.  For example, if you go back in time and make some changes that aren’t corrected, your parents might never meet and you will not be born, or a few Republicans in 2016 will stay home and someone else will be elected president.

Of course, there is no rule against traveling back in time and gathering some collectible coins and rare dollar bills, then returning to 2018 and selling them all on Ebay.

Join the fun in this episode, and Merry Christmas!

Oh, and the “Alrighty then!” joke is a reference to the movie Ace Ventura, Pet Detective.

Instead of being sent into this movie by a strike of lightning, it might be better to just watch it on DVD:

Episode 22 – Survivalist Author Angery American

Today I caught up with survivalist and post-apocalyptic author, Chris Weatherman, known by his pen name, Angery American.

Angery American is known mostly for having written the “Going Home” book series, which is currently being turned into a TV series. Angery American can be followed on Amazon here.

He has also co-written books with authors Walt Browning and G. Michael Hopf.

In this wide-ranging interview, we discussed how he comes up with the characters and plots in his books, the book business, Beowulf, the political riots in the news lately, and the relationship between prepper enthusiasm and which political party occupies the White House. We even discussed how he got the “Angery” part of his pen name.

Here is the list of blogs, websites, book and YouTube channels Angery American either produces or follows:

Episode 20 – Inside Venezuela Today

In this episode I play some interviews I got from three people who currently live in Venezuela and speak fairly good English. I asked them to answer these questions:

Question 1: What are things really like in Venezuela today?

Question 2: What were Venezuelans told to get them to vote for Hugo Chavez in the late 1990’s?

Question 3: What would you stockpile if you could go back to Venezuela before things got bad that would allow you to better survive Venezuela today?

Question 4: What are your immediate plans?

In my opinion, these people were not nearly as nervous about the situation in Venezuela as I would be if I lived there.  Let’s face it, Venezuela is on its way to becoming a failed state, like Syria, Somalia or Libya.  Anyone who currently lives in Venezuela should just leave.

Also, I believe that what is happening in Venezuela today could someday happen in the United States.

My main takeaway was the common answer to the “stockpile” question.  Most of these Venezuelans said that if they could go back to Venezuela many years ago, they would stockpile dollars.  For American preppers, that translates to the importance of stockpiling “junk silver.”  “Junk silver” is loosely defined as dimes and quarters with the year 1964 or older.  In those coins, it is acknowledged that the silver content of the coin is at least 90%, and it is believed that these coins will be the currency of choice in a post-SHTF United States.  You can buy junk silver coins at a local coin shop or online here or here.

Earlier in the podcast, I read from the end of chapter 1 of my book on survival retreats, Dirt Cheap Valuable Survival Retreat. As I wrote in this book, setting up a survival retreat in the country is easier and cheaper than you might suspect.  But it would also be a good idea to have a “Plan B,” meaning that if society doesn’t collapse as expected, then you can still sell your survival retreat for a profit several years down the road.  My inspiration for this idea is comedian Bob Hope, who made a lot of money with his real estate investments back in the day.

I also recommend another book that also discusses survival retreats, Going Off The Grid by Gary Collins.

Here are some movies that I referred to as giving a good introduction of what life is like in a failed state, like what I believe Venezuela will soon be:

Mad Max

Road Warrior

Book of Eli

Titanic (not that it has anything to do with what I was talking about, but it is a good metaphor for Venezuela today)

If you are interested in donating money to charities to help either people inside Venezuela or those who have left, I found some worthwhile charities:

Matthew 25 Ministries

Catholic Relief Services

International Rescue Committee

American Refugee Committee

Here are some charities that look interesting but are not rated by Charity Navigator:

Cuatro Por Venezuela

Salto Project — Helping Venezuelans Leave

Before donating to any charity, it is a good idea to first check out the charity at Charity Navigator.

Episode 16 – Prepper’s Sermon: Memorial Day 2018

Occasionally I volunteer to give a sermon at our local nursing home, and included here is a recording of the the sermon I gave last July.  The themes of Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day and July 4 are all wrapped into this episode.

Your Christian faith, and what happens to you after you die, are legitimate prepper issues.  Serious preppers should listen to this episode, and take seriously the issue of faith.

There were some serious moments in this talk, but also a few jokes and a happy audience.  There was even a good story I found of George Washington praying during the American Revolutionary War.

There are no Amazon links to any products, but below are some useful links for further investigation into this most important topic (I like these pastors).  You can also find a good local church from these links:
