Episode 26 – Cache Tube Prepping

Behold the humble cache tube — something that you fill up with important stuff and bury somewhere, hoping that someday you can dig it up and use the contents to survive. If the world comes to an end, you will be glad you have a few of these around.

In this episode I discuss how to put one together and what you might want to put inside it before burying it.

A lot of this information can be found in the Containers chapter of my book Dirt Cheap Valuable Prepping, or in chapter 18 of my book Dirt Cheap Valuable Survival Retreat.

I recommend the material ABS to put together a cache tube. I recently paid almost $55 at my local Lowe’s for the parts for this cache tube. Here is what I bought:

A 2-foot long, 4-inch diameter ABS tube (but you can make a cache tube 8 feet or longer if you want);

All-purpose cement (really glue in a can that can be used for PVC or ABS tubes);

A 4-inch diameter ABS cap;

A 4-inch diameter ABS female adaptor;

A 4-inch diameter ABS plug (to screw into the threaded end of the female adaptor);

Common plumber’s tape;

Any size nuts, 100 or more, that you can throw around in your yard or flower bed or wherever you bury this thing. That way, any smartalec who shows up with a metal detector, trying to find anything you might have buried, will spend a lot of time digging up nuts, then get frustrated and leave in a huff.  I would recommend against using longer mechanical screws, wood screws, or nails for this.

A cache tube is not just for burying. You can put one of these into a car fender, a tree, a piece of furniture, under the floor or inside the wall of your house (but watch the 1950 Jimmy Durante movie, A Christmas Wish, as a cautionary tale about hiding anything inside your house wall).

Here are some possible contents to put inside your cache tube before you bury it:

Freezer baggies (pint size)

Berkey Sport Filtered Water Bottle

Travel Bidet

Bandaids

Gerber Multi-tool

Junk silver coins (for this I have been a satisfied customer of at JM Bullion)

Disassembled guns and ammo

Wells Lamont Work Gloves

Extra Clothes

Menstrual Cup (tampon replacement)

Flashlight (Dorcy, weatherproof)

Eneloop AA Batteries

Goal Zero solar battery charger

Battery Tester

Medication (your prescription meds + OTC meds like Benadryl, aspirin and Immodium AD)

Anti-skin-fungus lotion

An extra set of your glasses in a hard case

Electrolyte drink mix

Camping Blanket

Mountain House food pouches

Long spork

550 Paracord

Rain Poncho

Episode 25 – Unusual Preps With Author Ron Foster

I had a wide-ranging conversation on unusual preps with prepper author Ron Foster.  Foster has published 62 prepping books (!), including his latest, Old Farts Survival Guide. This is a great book on prepping skills, and despite the $25 pricetag, it is well worth it and should be included in every serious prepper’s library. This book is also something you could leave on your living room coffee table, and because of the number of photos and diagrams in it, many of your family members will thumb through the book and quickly learn some prepping skills.

Episode 24 – A. American And Off-Grid Power

What will you do when the power grid goes down? It might be time to prepare to go off-grid, or just stay on grid and reduce your electricity bill.

Author Angery American, who spent 20 years as an industrial electrician before becoming an author, joins us and describes some tips and tricks to installing an off-grid power system, or economically staying on the electrical grid.

Follow this link here to see all of the books Angery American has written, and follow him on Amazon, so that you can be alerted when he has new releases.

A lot of what we discuss in this podcast can be found in chapter 23 of my book, Dirt Cheap Valuable Survival Retreat. In that book I have a TON of references to off-grid power suppliers and sources of education.

Here are some links to other things discussed in this episode:

The Donna Reed Show. This television show was my idea. Refer to Survival In Motion’s Christmas 2018 podcast

Honda 2kw Portable Generator. These things are great and usually go for around $1,000. Start it like a lawn mower.

Honda 3kw Generator. These things are also great, a little more powerful than the portable 2kw Honda generators, and they come with their own internal battery, so they can start like a car.

Wheel Kit For The Honda 3kw Generator. The 3kw generator weighs 150 pounds, so this wheel kit will make it more portable

Canadian Solar

The Inverter Store

The Solar Biz. This is my favorite supplier and educator. They will make sure you know what you are doing to go off-grid

Backwoods Solar. This is a great supplier and they will help educate you. Lots of articles and personal help.

Real Goods. A good supplier and educator

Episode 23 – It’s A Wonderful Prepping Life

I know this might be hard to believe, but I was working on an episode of the Survival In Motion podcast when I got struck by lightning, and I was sent back in time into a Christmas movie from 1946. I accidentally sent George Bailey running off the wrong way on the bridge and hilarity ensued. Will I be able to undo all the damage before SHTF?

I eventually convey the important prepper lesson that if you ever go back in time, you need to clean up your mess, so that you don’t mess things up in the present.  For example, if you go back in time and make some changes that aren’t corrected, your parents might never meet and you will not be born, or a few Republicans in 2016 will stay home and someone else will be elected president.

Of course, there is no rule against traveling back in time and gathering some collectible coins and rare dollar bills, then returning to 2018 and selling them all on Ebay.

Join the fun in this episode, and Merry Christmas!

Oh, and the “Alrighty then!” joke is a reference to the movie Ace Ventura, Pet Detective.

Instead of being sent into this movie by a strike of lightning, it might be better to just watch it on DVD:

Episode 22 – Survivalist Author Angery American

Today I caught up with survivalist and post-apocalyptic author, Chris Weatherman, known by his pen name, Angery American.

Angery American is known mostly for having written the “Going Home” book series, which is currently being turned into a TV series. Angery American can be followed on Amazon here.

He has also co-written books with authors Walt Browning and G. Michael Hopf.

In this wide-ranging interview, we discussed how he comes up with the characters and plots in his books, the book business, Beowulf, the political riots in the news lately, and the relationship between prepper enthusiasm and which political party occupies the White House. We even discussed how he got the “Angery” part of his pen name.

Here is the list of blogs, websites, book and YouTube channels Angery American either produces or follows:

Episode 20 – Inside Venezuela Today

In this episode I play some interviews I got from three people who currently live in Venezuela and speak fairly good English. I asked them to answer these questions:

Question 1: What are things really like in Venezuela today?

Question 2: What were Venezuelans told to get them to vote for Hugo Chavez in the late 1990’s?

Question 3: What would you stockpile if you could go back to Venezuela before things got bad that would allow you to better survive Venezuela today?

Question 4: What are your immediate plans?

In my opinion, these people were not nearly as nervous about the situation in Venezuela as I would be if I lived there.  Let’s face it, Venezuela is on its way to becoming a failed state, like Syria, Somalia or Libya.  Anyone who currently lives in Venezuela should just leave.

Also, I believe that what is happening in Venezuela today could someday happen in the United States.

My main takeaway was the common answer to the “stockpile” question.  Most of these Venezuelans said that if they could go back to Venezuela many years ago, they would stockpile dollars.  For American preppers, that translates to the importance of stockpiling “junk silver.”  “Junk silver” is loosely defined as dimes and quarters with the year 1964 or older.  In those coins, it is acknowledged that the silver content of the coin is at least 90%, and it is believed that these coins will be the currency of choice in a post-SHTF United States.  You can buy junk silver coins at a local coin shop or online here or here.

Earlier in the podcast, I read from the end of chapter 1 of my book on survival retreats, Dirt Cheap Valuable Survival Retreat. As I wrote in this book, setting up a survival retreat in the country is easier and cheaper than you might suspect.  But it would also be a good idea to have a “Plan B,” meaning that if society doesn’t collapse as expected, then you can still sell your survival retreat for a profit several years down the road.  My inspiration for this idea is comedian Bob Hope, who made a lot of money with his real estate investments back in the day.

I also recommend another book that also discusses survival retreats, Going Off The Grid by Gary Collins.

Here are some movies that I referred to as giving a good introduction of what life is like in a failed state, like what I believe Venezuela will soon be:

Mad Max

Road Warrior

Book of Eli

Titanic (not that it has anything to do with what I was talking about, but it is a good metaphor for Venezuela today)

If you are interested in donating money to charities to help either people inside Venezuela or those who have left, I found some worthwhile charities:

Matthew 25 Ministries

Catholic Relief Services

International Rescue Committee

American Refugee Committee

Here are some charities that look interesting but are not rated by Charity Navigator:

Cuatro Por Venezuela

Salto Project — Helping Venezuelans Leave

Before donating to any charity, it is a good idea to first check out the charity at Charity Navigator.

Episode 17 – Sneak Preview Of New Post-Apoc Book

I this episode I discuss my previous post-apocalyptic book, entitled EMP: The End Of The Grid As We Know It, available at Amazon at this link here, and the sequel to it, which is coming out soon.  I discuss some of the challenges I had in writing both books, including not making an end of the world book too graphic.

Then I include a reading of parts of the sequel book, which will be released late summer or early fall.  The setting in the part of the book included in this reading is this: it has been three days since the EMP attack on New York City, and the protagonist, David, has decided to stay in town and help out (I advise against this, BTW).  David works for the New York City Office of Emergency Management, and he is working on clearing the stalled cars from the Brooklyn Bridge so that food can be brought in from Long Island to feed the people of Manhattan.

At the end of the reading of part of the sequel book, I have an announcement about something I will be giving away soon, available for a limited time.

Anyone can “follow” me on Amazon at this link here, and that way you will be updated by Amazon whenever I have a new book sold on Amazon.

Episode 15 – Disgusting Preps

In this episode I go through the most disgusting of all the preps that are found in my two non-fiction prepping books, Dirt Cheap Valuable Prepping, and Dirt Cheap Valuable Survival Retreat.  And boy, is this episode disgusting!  Rated “R” for Revolting!

Below are some helpful links for this episode:

Travel bidet with carrying case, for $10 on Amazon.  Much better to stock up on these than trying to stockpile toilet paper.

Here is a link to a pair of (post-childbirth) mentrual cups for $16, including  carrying case.  (The pre-child-birth size is at the link here.)  These are so popular with women, it might be a good idea to use them before any emergency makes tampons unavailable.

Shop rags for $10 on Amazon.  A good last resort for many uses.

Skin fungus cream with a unit cost almost as cheap as what I just bought at Walmart.

Here is the link to a website of a company that sells and delivers pretty basic porta-potties for as low as $700.  They have a ton of options, including a dump valve and a trailer.  Shipping is offered.  This company may or may not work for you, but it is a great place to start.

Rid-X is great treatment for septic tanks.  Be a supporter of culture!

Snake-Catcher for $30 sold on Amazon.  These things are great.  I saw one in action and it was very impressive.

Here is a round-head shovel sold on amazon for $29, which is more than you would pay for a similar shovel at your local hardware store or Home Depot.  But this shovel is very well-made, and an extra-long handle will enable you to chop at a poisonous snake from a longer distance.

Equate brand anti-diarrheal pills.  These would be great to stock up on — very helpful if you eat some bad food.

Equate brand laxative pills.  Same here.

Here is a link to the cheapest odorless garlic pills on Amazon.  $8 for 250 softgels.

I can’t say I have tried these, but here is a link to some IntestinePro pills that might work to cleanse your stomach of parasites.  $25 on Amazon for 30 servings.  Those who have used these pills are very happy with them.

As I wrote in my book, snakes will often get tangled up in bird netting that is put on the ground.  That would make it easier for you to catch and dispatch any unwanted snakes.

Episode 13 – My Bug Out Bag Inventory

In this episode I review the contents of my bug out bag and share some unusual ideas on bug out bags.  I believe it is okay to over-pack a bug out bag, enabling you to discard unneeded items depending on the disaster at hand.  I also value comfort items and good-tasting food, to keep up morale.

Here are some of the items I discuss in this episode:

Black Backpack

Pup tent

Tire Iron (18-inch Wrecking Bar)

Machete (Gerber Gator Machete With Black Nylon Sheath)

Gerber Folding Shovel + Case

Stansport Collapsible Water Bag 2 Gallon

Berkey Sports Water Filter

Mainstay Emergency Wafer, 3600 Calories

Esbit Camping Cook Set

Gerber Multitool With Sheath

EDC (Maxpedition E.D.C. Pocket Organizer)

Knife and Sheath (Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate Knife, Serrated Edge)

Spork (Light My Fire Titanium Spork)

Flashlight 250-Lumen Dorcy Weatherproof With Battery Indicator

Rain Poncho Camouflage

Lifestraw

Red Nylon First Aid Bag (Voodoo Tactical MOLLE)

Quickclot sponge

Quickclot powder

Triple Antibiotic First Aid Ointment

Don’t forget to get some very small pill containers at The Container Store.  This will save space in your bag.

Mountain House pouches, and the MRE’s mentioned here can be bought at Emergency Essentials or Ready Made Resources.
